| What are the Stages of Catabolism (5th Apr 23 at 12:04pm UTC) What are the Possible Stages of Catabolism | | Catabolism is the breakdown of large molecules into smaller molecules by the body to acquire energy. Catabolism occurs in three stages:
Digestion: Large molecules such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats are broken down into smaller components during the first step of catabolism. With the aid of digestive enzymes, this process takes place in the mouth, stomach, and small intestine
The Citric Acid Cycle and Glycolysis: When smaller molecules are absorbed into the bloodstream, they are carried to cells where they can be further broken down. In the second step of catabolism, glucose molecules are broken down in the cytoplasm of cells via a series of reactions known as glycolysis.
The glycolysis products then join the citric acid cycle (also known as the Krebs cycle or TCA cycle), which occurs in cell mitochondria. Energy is extracted from the breakdown of small molecules and stored in the shape of ATP during this cycle.
The electron transport chain, which also happens in the mitochondria of cells, is the final stage of catabolism. At this stage, electrons are transferred from glycolysis and the citric acid cycle products to oxygen, resulting in a significant amount of ATP. This energy is used for cellular activities like a muscular contraction, protein synthesis, and other metabolic processes.
Catabolism is a continuous process that occurs constantly in the body to provide energy for different cellular functions.
